About the region

Murang'a lies south of Nyeri, lower and warmer, and is almost entirely smallholder-owned. It has historically been less sought after than its northern neighbours, which for a buyer paying attention is the point: the soil and the varieties are the same, and the price is not.

SL28 and SL34 dominate here as they do across central Kenya, with Ruiru 11 and Batian planted where disease pressure demanded it.

In the cup

Recognisably Kenyan but gentler: blackcurrant and plum over a rounder acidity, with a medium body and more chocolate sweetness than the higher regions show.

Terrain

Lower slopes south of Mount Kenya, warmer and less steep than Nyeri or Kirinyaga.

Nyeri Red volcanic soil on the slopes of Mount Kenya; the most sought-after lots. Kirinyaga East of Nyeri, with a dense concentration of well-run factories.
