Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right grind size?

Match the grind to your brew method — fine for espresso, medium for pour over, coarse for French press. Use the grind size chart to find the setting for your specific grinder.

What's a good coffee-to-water ratio?

A common starting point is 1:16 (1 g of coffee to 16 g of water) for filter coffee, and about 1:2 for espresso. Adjust to taste — the ratio calculator helps you dial it in.

Why does my coffee taste bitter or sour?

Bitter usually means over-extraction — grind coarser or brew shorter. Sour means under-extraction — grind finer or brew longer. Change one thing at a time so you can taste the effect.

Do I need an expensive grinder?

No. A burr grinder that grinds consistently matters more than the price tag — what counts is dialing in the right grind size for how you brew.

Are the tools and charts free?

Yes. Every tool, grind chart and guide on Coffeeholic is free and needs no account.
