Burundi grows Arabica across the high central plateau, almost entirely on holdings of a few hundred trees. Because no individual farm produces enough to make a lot, the unit that matters here is the *station de lavage* — the washing station that collects cherry from hundreds of neighbours, ferments and dries it, and puts its own name on the bag. Traceability in Burundi means the station and its collection area, not the farm.
The country is landlocked and dependent on road and rail routes through Tanzania and Kenya to reach a port, which adds cost and time to every shipment. Coffee is nonetheless the leading export. Potato taste defect — a bacterial off-flavour that makes an individual cup taste raw and vegetal — is a persistent regional problem and is one of the main operational focuses at station level.

Bright, juicy and often startlingly sweet: blackcurrant, red berry and grapefruit acidity, a clean silky body, and floral aromatics on the best lots. Burundian coffee at its best sits alongside Rwanda and Kenya in the East African bright-and-fruity register, with a little more delicacy than either.
Coffee was introduced under Belgian administration in the 1930s, with cultivation initially compulsory for households. The industry was nationalised after independence, then progressively privatised from the 1990s, with the washing stations sold off through the 2000s. The civil war of 1993—2005 stalled the sector; most of the quality infrastructure dates from after it.
