Behind every step

  1. Start here

    18 g in · 36 g out · 93 °C

    1. Weigh beans — Weigh out the beans — fresh, not pre-ground.
    2. Grind — Grind fine, straight into the portafilter.
    3. Distribute — Distribute the grounds level in the basket.
    4. Tamp — Tamp level — one confident press.
    5. Pull the shot — Aim for ~36 g out in 25–30 s. Stop on blond.
    6. Enjoy — Drink it now — crema and all.

  2. 2Add ice

    0:10

Fill it properly full. A half-filled glass melts faster and finishes weaker than a packed one — the ice is what chills the drink, and ice that is busy melting is not chilling anything.

  3. 3Add water

    0:15

Cold, not hot: hot water would melt the ice on contact and you would be drinking meltwater. Leave room at the top for the shot — the water figure here is the drink's own, so adjust it and the glass follows.

  4. 4Pour the shot

    0:10

The shot goes in last so it chills the instant it lands, which is what keeps an iced americano tasting like espresso rather than like cold coffee. Pulled onto ice it also stays clear instead of muddying.

  5. 5Enjoy

    0:10

Coffee keeps changing as it cools: aromatics fade, acidity sharpens and sweetness comes forward. Drink it soon after brewing, and taste it as it drops in temperature — that's how you learn what to adjust next time.
